Poetry, ca. 1799-1807.

A collection of poems mostly written between the ages of 17 and 22 while Sargent attended Harvard; the volume is entitled "Trifles Light as Air," with a subtitle "most of which happened at Cambridge." Pasted on the inside cover is a newspaper clipping, hand-dated "June 20, 1803," listing the names of the graduates of Harvard, including Winthrop Sargent. Accompanying leaves include handwritten poems and translated poems by Sargent and others; two newspaper clippings; a lock of Sargent's hair; and a handwritten obituary about Sargent.

Meant to be read before the Phi Beta Kappa Society, but Sargent was ill and could not read the poem (information from donor). From the description of A poem on taste : manuscript, [ca. 1800] (Harvard University). WorldCat record id: 612843006 Winthrop Sargent was a member of the 1803 graduating class at Harvard College and was studying law at the time of his death. The obituary in the collection states that he died of consumption on 11 January 1808 at the age of 26. ...
